Twenty of our formula classic racers qualified at a wet and cold Silverstone for the third round of this popular series. By far the quickest driver in the treacherous conditions was the talented Danny Winstanley. He was finding grip, or at least control, when others were struggling. I have rarely seen so many spinning Ferraris in one session.

Conditions were no better for the race. Peter Everingham was frustrated by a spin on lap one, but at least all avoided contact with the white 328.

Winstanley lead the race as expected, but it was Dave Tomlin (308 GTB) who eventually took the win after a mature and skilful drive. On new deeply treaded Pirellis he passed pole sitter Danny Winstanley (on virtually slick old tyres) on the third lap. Danny then unfortunately lost his 328 on the slippery surface and clattered  into the pitwall to retire.

Jim Cartwright (328) took up the chase, but was not able to match Tomlin's pace. Behind these two there was a great battle between Wayne Marrs (328) and Tris Simpson (GT4) with several position changes. Tris took advantage of his new tyres and must have enjoyed dicing this high up the field. Relative newcomers Tim Walker (328) and Jack Dwane (Mondial) completed the top six.

In truth all that survived unscathed were winners. The sun will shine, tracks will dry and temperatures will rise. It can’t happen soon enough.
