RACES 12&13 : Nürburgring: October 6/7 2012
by David Tomlin
|
The FOC have not visited Nurburgring for many years so it was a first time on the track for most of its drivers. The weekend started with practice sessions on the Friday which proved challenging in the cold and wet conditions. There was a single qualifying session first thing on Saturday morning. Fastest laps counted for race 1 with 2nd fastest laps counting for race 2. Amazingly a dry track greeted the 25 cars. There were 10 from PFO, and 15 from PFfc.
In formula classic David Tomlin (308GTB) led qualifying from Nigel Jenkins (328) and Nick Taylor (Mondial T).
Race 1
A good start from David Tomlin saw him leading from a fast starting Ben Cartwright (328 GTB) and Nick Taylor. However Nigel Jenkins was up to second at the end of lap 1, and would take the lead on lap 4 when Tomlin skidded wide at the RTL bend. Further back Tim Summers (Grp4 Daytona) and Pete Fisk (328 GTB) were having a race long dual, as were John Swift (308 GTB) and Didier Benroya (Mondial T). Nigel Jenkins went on to take the win and Group 4 honours ahead of Tomlin (Grp2) and Ben Cartwright (Grp3). Tris Simpson took the Group 1 honours in his rapid 308GT4
Race 2
David Tomlin won the drag race to the first corner but a shove from behind from Taylor’s Mondial spun the 308 leaving Nigel Jenkins to lead from Ben Cartwight and Wayne Marrs. A recovering Tomlin was to come through the field and ultimately get second place, but Nigel Jenkins was well clear and secured the win. Wayne Marrs managed to get stuck in the run off area at the end of the main straight and was the only non finisher. Tris Simpson, Nick Taylor and Chris Butler were separated by only a second at the end of the race. Final class winners were Jenkins (Grp4), Tomlin (Grp2), Ben Cartwright (Grp3) and Simpson (Grp1).
