FERRARI HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 1 : NORTH WEALD : 24 MARCH 2002
by Richard Allen

F355 pilot Jon Goodwin showed his serious intentions when he blitzed the opposition at the opening round for the 2002 Ferrari Hill Climb Championship. No hills to be seen at North Weald, just a featureless 1.62k airfield sprint with a fairly indifferent surface. A reasonable entry of eight Ferraris included a good selection, from Peter Hayman's 512TR to Jeff Simpson's 246GT, and one of our new recruits, Steve Target, out on his first competitive event with a 308GT4.

Weather conditions were good all day and Jon Goodwin, freshly honed from the Reeders' Castle Combe track day a couple of days before, stormed off to head the practice times comfortably from Richard Allen's similar car and Peter Hayman's 512.

After lunch Jon went quicker still with a 59.44, comfortably ahead of Hayman on 60.98 and Allen on 61.13. Richard Prio,r after a lacklustre practice session that included a spin, improved hugely on his final, taking his 348 round in an impressive 62.56. Geoff Dark, using his 308GTB, was on 64.69 to comfortably head Mike Spicer's similar car on 65.39. Meanwhile an inspired Jeff Simpson matched Spicer's 308 time exactly with the 246GT. Steve Target, with brand new Dunlop tyres on his GT4 and zero experience, was never going to live with these people but he improved dramatically and clocked 70.97, a time showing great promise for the future.
