FERRARI HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 2 : PRESCOTT : 5 MAY 2002
by Richard
Allen
Twelve Ferraris were entered, including the 330GTC driven by Maranello Sales Director Tony Willis. It is a few years since we witnessed a front-engined V12 here. Back in the seventies these tipos were a familiar sight at Prescott. Notable too was the debut of new FHCC recruit Simon Burn and his 308GTBi.
With Geoffrey Rollason's 360 Modena missing, Jon Goodwin comfortably headed the practice times with his F355. Peter Hayman, with his 512TR, was the only Ferrari driver likely to get near Goodwin but he had not competed at Prescott before. He improved dramatically to a remarkable 51 second run on his third practice but then, on a further practice run, overcooked it at Ettores damaging the 512 sufficiently to be out of the running. Mike Spicer too came unstuck, sliding his 308GTB in to the armco exiting the Esses. A damaged drive shaft meant he was unable to continue.
On Sunday Jon Goodwin strolled to a class win a couple of seconds ahead of the lower powered pursuing Ferraris. Geoff Dark (308GTB) claimed second spot, though an inspired Christopher England took his 308GTS so close to Geoff's time he claimed the maximum Championship points as well as third overall. Richard Prior (348ts) was not far back heading Brian Jackson (308GTB) for fourth overall and winning the Club handicap at the same time. John Marshall, back out again after missing the 2001 season, was top 328 ahead of the similar cars of Keith Maddox and Andrew Duncan. Simon Burn was next, ahead of Tony Willis who found the 330 a little short of nimble at this venue.
With two events now run Jon Goodwin has put himself firmly at the top of the Championship table ahead of current champion Geoff Dark. But there's a long season ahead........
