ROUND 4 : Harewood : 13 May 2012
by Richard Prior |
After a night at the Harewood Arms and a sociable dinner with our fellow competitors, we returned to the track on the Sunday for a repeat performance.
Changes to the running order were the addition of the Saturday Oulton Park circuit racers John Swift in a 355 (replacing Brian Jackson in his 328) and Chris Butler instead of Andrew Holman (both 355).
Apart from these two newbies, everyone had the benefit of five runs the previous day but with his intimate knowledge of Harewood Butler was straight on the pace and just 0.16 behind fastest man Richard Prior (355) in first practice.
After two more practice runs the order was still the same, Prior was on 67.34 secs and Butler 68.39 but Keith Anderson (360) was only 0.01 behind this battle.
Amongst the 328s Richard Allen was also in the high 68's, while Mike Spicer was now down to 69.90. Mike's son James had some excellent start times of 2.38 & 2.34 but after leaving the line on P3 the 348 just stopped before it reached the 64ft line. After a tow back to the paddock Spicer senior had sussed that the 348's alternator was working intermittently and the battery was totally drained. Unfortunately James could take no further part in the meeting.
Caroline Cooper in the family 360 was three seconds quicker than any of her Saturday times showing great talent at learning her new sport, also Wendy Ann Marshall was two seconds up on her previous days best in her 328, and Peter Rogerson was progressing well in the 360 over one second up on yesterday's times.
For Sunday's main event it was just two "official" runs due to the British Championship competitors and their top 12 runoffs. Wendy Anne Marshall had fuel problems in the paddock just before her final run and had to search urgently for a gallon of finest unleaded, which must have helped the adrenalin as she finished the day on 76.90, Peter Hitchman was on 79.27 and Julian Playford 76.18 seconds.
Caroline Cooper finished off a terrific debut weekend with two 75 second runs, the fastest being 75.3, also in a 360 was Peter Rogerson who had beaten his personal best with 74.77 seconds. Shaun Smith and Lorraine Hitchman were only half a second apart in their 328s with Lorraine coming out on top and taking 6 points on PEP.
The next 4 drivers were covered by less than 0.20 of a second with John Swift (71.59) leading the group by 1/100th of a second to John Marshall's 308 GT4, then Pauline Goodwin on 71.67 ahead of Jeff Cooper's 71.77. Mike Spicer had put in a cracking run and was the only one in the 70's, a low one at 70.12 which was well up with the 355s and it meant that when the minus 3% PEP was applied it bagged him a massive 17 points.
The 355s of Phil Whitehead and Chris Hitchman were both in the 69's (Phil's confidence improving all the time with a fast speed trap of 82 mph) while Richard Allen's similar car was ahead with 68.96 thanks to the quickest 0 to 64 ft time of 2.36.
Down to the top three now, Richard Prior got a clean round on his first run with 67.37 and 83 mph at the speed trap, Chris Butler started well with 2.37 seconds over 64ft but had been behind Prior at the finish line all day and his 67.89 was as good as could be expected, but the surprise of the day was to come with Keith Anderson, using the extra power of the 360 Modena on the top half of the course, topping the speed chart with 87 mph and finishing in 67.75 and ahead of Butler to take the 2nd place trophy and 12 points after PEP factors were applied. Although 3rd on scratch Butler still snatched the maximum 20 points with Prior settling for 15.
More 360 success for Caroline Cooper as she took first place on Handicap (beating her target by 1.70 seconds) and also Peter Rogerson 2nd on Handicap for his PB beating time on run 2.
