The latest race in the Pirelli Ferrari Open series was a huge disappointment as far as the entry was concerned. Having had some big fields in the 20s we were suddenly down to just six runners, which is not a lot round the long Oulton International circuit! But there were some good quality cars, with three 458 Challenges up against a quick 430/Ch and an equally quick 360GTC. Derek Johnston’s sinister black 458 took an easy pole, nearly three secs ahead of Wayne Marrs' 360 GTC. Dave Tomlin (430/Ch) was only just behind and then came the two white 458/Chs of Craig Milner and Paul Bailey. Tim Ingram-Hill brought up the rear in his outdated 355/Ch but he was only collecting signatures for his international license. As (bad) luck would have it this was scheduled to be a relatively long 30-min race and, what’s more, it was scheduled to be the last of the day so the few spectators could be forgiven for going home before the start..... But they missed a good treat. For the first few laps, although Johnston disappeared into the distance at the front, the next four ran in close company and made a terrific sight (and sound) as they charged over Oulton’s undulating scenery. The 458s in particular looked fab and were a stark reminder of how much the world of Ferrari GT racing had moved on in the last few seasons. Having said that it was Marrs’ potent 360 which initially held second place until Tomlin squeezed by on lap 4, pulling out a little bit of an advantage. But Marrs came back at him and took second place back some six laps later. Tomlin had a little moment and Milner also got by, but was soon re-passed by Tomlin’s 430. And after that the field strung out a little, with Derek Johnston taking a commanding win having rattled off 17 very quick laps. Marrs finished second with Tomlin third. Click here for paddock pics.
