Restrictions on Ferrari Scale Models?

The 22nd October 1998 issue of Autosport magazine contained the following letter in its Correspondence Page:

New Model Army

Yesterday, I received a letter from Luca Tameo in Italy. He is a producer of Ferrari model cars. It said: "We have received a letter from Ferrari to stop all production of Ferrari models at the end of this year. This letter has been sent to all other model manufacturers, including Burago, Minichamps, Vitesse, Tamiya, Solido, Majorette, etc. The American company Mattel has got the exclusive rights to miniature Scuderia products, and only it will be able to produce Ferrari models."

It seems that the name of Ferrari is no longer in the safe hands that Enzo would have wished it. Having resisted the attempts of Ford in the 1960s, Ferrari has now sold out to an American toy company.

It may seem a small point, but Ferrari occupies a unique place in motoring folklore. It's a sign of the times, but it's sad when the most famous marque hits the '90s.

I cannot help but remember the comments of Sir William Lyons; that every child who bought a Dinky Jaguar was a potential owner when he grew up.

Does anyone out there know any more about this?
