SHELL HISTORIC CHALLENGE : Spa-Francorchamps
The traditional Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge got underway at Spa-Francorchamps. The Challenge, which is traditionally for historic Ferraris, this year also features Maseratis.
27 cars were entered for the first event. Among the newcomers was a Ferrari 330 GTO of Switzerland's Carlo Vogele and the 250 Europa GT of the American Brian Devries. Amongst the Maseratis entered was a trio of 300 S and a Bora.
Dominating the weekend was the Swiss driver Patrick Stieger who, in his 512 M was the quickest in practice and won both races. There was a close fought battle for the remaining podium places between David Franklin (Ferrari 365 GTB) and Peter Hardman (Ferrari 330 LM,) who shared out the places in the two races: Hardman second ahead of Franklin in the first with the two men swopping positions in the second.
France's Jean Guikas picked up two good fourth places with his Maserati Bora. The second race saw a spectacular battle, watched by Scaglietti, between the 250 GT of Fabrizio Brigato and Nicolaus Spinger, the 365 GTB of Mario Bernardi and the Maserati 300 S of Burkhard Von Schenk.
The 1999 championship is run over five races. After Spa-Francorchamps, the next round is on 10th June at Montlhery in France. On 4th July, the historic Ferraris and Maseratis will fight it out at the Nurburgring and on the 1st August, the series moves to Silverstone. The final as usual, is held in Italy (6-7 November,) as part of the "Tutte le Ferrari in Pista" event.
