Eddie Gets In The Papers
10.6.99

Eddie Irvine has been doing a round of magazine interviews, notably with Autosprint magazine, in which he seems to have touched a few sensitive spots. This has fuelled speculation about his future with Ferrari, although Jordan have categorically denied that they have had any talks with Irvine about joining their team in 2000.

Despite being repeatedly out-paced by Michael Schumacher, Irvine still seems to think that had he not been contractually obliged to let the German past, he would more often be in a Grand Prix winning situation.

The interviews contained criticisms of Mika Hakkinen's abilities and also a claim that Irvine sees himself as better than David Coulthard.

Mike Hakkinen has hit back at Irvine, saying patronisingly that "Eddie has been in F1 quite a few years now, progressing his talents and performance over the years. It is strange for him to comment about my speed, I don't think he knows."

The speculation regarding Irvine's possible replacement continues unabated with some unlikely names being mentioned. Our guess is still that it will be David Coulthard.
