Newey says 'No' to Ferrari
Adrian Newey, ace aerodynamicist for the McLaren team, has confirmed his loyalty to the Woking-based team following a rumoured offer by Ferrari to join them.
40-year old Newey is commonly regarded as the best designer in his field and joined McLaren in August 1997 after becoming unhappy with the management structure at champion title holders, Williams, where he worked on cars that gave the team five constructors and four drivers titles since 1990.
McLaren won both driver and constructors titles in 1998, the first full year that Newey was able to work on the cars.
"I enjoy the atmosphere at McLaren," Newey said. "It's a good team to work for and I'm very much involved in how the company runs and the decision making process. Having made the decision to join McLaren, I don't waste time thinking about anything else."
Newey is reportedly on a $3 million salary and it is likely that Ferrari offered him a great deal more but Newey would be uncomfortable working in Italy. "Maybe when the kids are at University," he quipped.
