Le Mans 24-Hours
It is sobering to remember that the last Ferrari victory at this great sports car race was in 1965, when Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory drove their 250LM flat out from start to finish to lead a Ferrari 1-2-3.
The 1999 event brought little of interest to Ferrari enthusiasts. Only one F333SP started, that of the J B Giesse team driven by Baldi/Pescatori/Policand. It never featured in the race and retired after 71 laps with transmission failure.
The race was surprisingly won by the BMW LMR of Martini/Dalmas/Winkelhock who beat the highly fancied three car Toyota team.
The two Audi R8R Spyders produced a great result, with a reliable run into third and fourth place, just behind the surviving Toyota GT-One.
The Mercedes team had an embarrassing failure when aerodynamic problems destroyed two of their cars, one during practice and one during the race. The third remaining Mercedes was withdrawn as a precaution.
