Schuey tries turbo
13.5.99

Autosport magazine has brought a report that Michael Schumacher spent an evening last week with Patrick Tambay's 1983 Ferrari 126C2/B turbo.

The Ferrari number one was keen to try the antique F1 racer and he had its original driver on hand to dispense advice.

One of the most awesome turbo F1 cars ever built, the Ferrari engine was capable of producing more than 1200 bhp in qualifying trim and could deliver it quite savagely.

'To be honest I didn't feel very at ease,' admitted Schumacher. 'This car is an historic monument and I was really scared I'd break something.'

Although he was not pushing too hard, Schumacher was amazed with how demanding the car was.

'I spent the whole time fiddling with the gear lever and I found shifting very difficult,' he said.

'To be honest I'd be terrified to race this thing, it's so dangerous.'

Tambay laughed at Schumacher's concerns and the double world champ was forced to admit that as much as he loved the car, he would never want to turn back the clock.

'When I look at it and tell myself that it's 16 years old, the only thought that comes into my head is that F1 is evolving very quickly,' he beamed.
