Bell's improbable defence embraced also the world of Ferrari when he was quoted in the Manchester Evening News as saying "Just because Wilmslow has a Ferrari showroom - and a very good one, if I may say so, this does not necessarily mean that it is a vortex of godlessness. After all, in a strictly theological sense God creates Ferraris too - or at least the world in which Ferraris are possible. "

The somewhat eccentric Member of Parliament for the Tatton constituency, Martin Bell, has jumped to the defence of his Wilmslow constituents who were denounced by their departing Curate with the words "I have never before met people who are quite so obsessed with money".
