ISRS : Barcelona : Clean Sweep for Ferrari
The first round of the International Spors Racing Series took placed on the Grand Prix circuit at Barcelona, with no less than seven Ferrari 333SPs amongst the total entry of 20. Although the entry list was rather small, it is expected to be up in the thirties by the time of the next round, which takes place in Monza. The Monza entry list already includes nine F333SPs.
Qualifying saw five Ferraris at the front, with Jean-Pierre Jabouille's two Giesse cars vying for pole position. In the end the championship winning team of last year, Emmanuel Collard/Vincenzo Sospiri, took pole from Mauro Baldi/Laurent Redon. Third place was taken by the ex-Formula 1 team, BMS Scuderia Italia, with their 333 driven by Christian Pescatori/Emanuele Moncini.
In the two and a half hour race, the Ferraris all showed strong reliability and took the top six places, with the unfortunate seventh car of Dick Waaijenberg/Alex van de Lof retiring just half a lap from the chequered flag with a loose wheel.
The experienced Collard/Sospiri team cruised to an untroubled win ahead of the Scuderia Italia 333 of Pescatori/Moncini. The second Giesse car of Baldi/Redon finished third, one lap behind the leaders, but would have been much closer at the finish had they not lost a lap by being held in the pits by a marshall during a safety car phase.
The opposition to the Ferraris was not particular strong, consisting of a few Riley & Scotts which did not last the pace, and a couple of, by now, ageing Kremer K8 Porsches which were simply slow.
Next round : Monza, Italy on 11th April.
