F50GT Unlikely to Happen
24.3.99

The recent flurry of speculation surrounding the entry of several Ferrari F50s in the FIA GT championship seems to have been brought to an end by Luca di Montezemolo's statement: "As long as I am President of Ferrari, the F50 will not take part in GT racing".

It always seemed unlikely that Ferrari would actively support (via Michelotto) a racing effort of an out of date production car. F50 production ceased in 1997. Typically, Ferrari SpA only supports current production models, as evidenced by the various Challenge series' and the speed record achievements of the 550 Maranello.

In the early days of GT1 racing, Michelotto produced three F50 racers and these were extensively tested at Fiorano but found to be uncompetitive against the McLaren GT1s. Excessive chassis flexing, weight and size were thought to be the problems.

However, the Swiss FIRST team has stated that it will continue with its plans to run an F50 in the GT championship. The prospect of developing the F50 without factory or Michelotto assistance seems daunting and it is thought unlikely that the project will come to fruition.
