SportsRacing World Cup : Kyalami : Ferrari Drivers Take Title
28.11.99

For the second year running Emmanuel Collard and Vincenzo Sospiri have won the SportsRacing World Cup, previously known as the ISRS. They went into the final round at Kyalami, South Africa, for a tense confrontation in which five drivers still had a chance of the title.

The DAMS-Lola of Gounon/Bernard took its fifth pole position of the series, followed by the four Ferrari 333SPs of Collard/Sospiri, Moncini/Pescatori, Zadra/Zadra and Baldi/Policand. The fifth Ferrari, that of Dick Waaijenberg/Alex Van der Lof qualified ninth.

The race was delayed due to torrential rain and the distance was eventually reduced from 2½ hours to 1½ hours.

Although the Ferraris were initially out-paced by two Lolas and a Riley & Scott, young Marco Zadra hung on gamely in his BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari. At the first pit stops Christian Pescatori, one of the title contenders, unexpectedly took over the leading Zadra car instead of his usual mount, and held on for a second place finish just 17 seconds behind the winning Lola.

But the fourth place for Sospiri/Collard was enough to give them the Sports/Racing championship and they were followed by the other Ferraris of Baldi/Policand (5th), Moncini/Zadra (6th) and Waaijenberg/Van der Lof (10th).

In the final championship standings Collard and Sospiri ended up with 104 points, closely followed by two more Ferrari drivers, Pescatori (101) and Moncini (92).
