At the fifth round of the FIA GT Championship at Anderstorp, Sweden, the BMS Scuderia Italia 550 of Jean-Denis Deletraz and Andrea Piccini secured its second successive win of the season. The three-hour race ran under attrociously wet conditions which saw the first 54 minutes take place behind the Safety Car. As soon as the field was released the Ferrari, which had qualified fourth, moved into the lead and stayed there to the end. The main challenge was expected to come from the Lister Storm of pole-sitters Campbell-Walter/Springer but they crashed out in the wet conditions. The second Storm also retired following several spins. Vipers therefore took 2nd, 3rd and 4th places ahead of the second BMS Ferrari 550 of Calderari/Bryner. This was the first time the Prodrive-built Ferraris had both finished in the points and continues a remarkable upturn in the fortunes of the team which had been looking lost at the beginning of the season. In the N-GT class the leading JMB 360 of Pescatori/Montermini was out of luck and could only finish fourth. Their team-mates Garbagnati/Bertolini, however, took second place in class behind the Freisinger Porsche of Ortelli/Collard. Pescatori/Montermini still have a useful lead in the championship, however, but Ortelli is closing in. Click here to return to the Ferrari Happenings page.
