On December 14th 1982 the Ferrari Club Nederland was founded and
by January 30 they had existed one and a half month with just three
members, the founders of which Hans Hugenholz jr. was the chairman
and his Royal Highness Prince Bernard of the Netherlands a honorary
member. On Saturday, October 11 2003 this memorable fact was celebrated
in a modest way with a jubilee tour. It wasn’t really a jubilee
but more a milestone and I think it was a successful weekend.
At first I witnessed the arrival of a 365 GTB/4 Daytona prototype
(s/n 10287), all kind of 250’s and many modern Ferraris next
to a Bentley, Porsche and some other makes.
The start was on an estate that is a top-location in the west of
Holland. Duin & Kruidberg is owned by a bank and used for conferences,
seminars etc. for the directors of that bank and their associates
and it was the first time that an automobile club was using the
facilities. All the participants were received with coffee and a
briefing before they started the tour. The tour brought us into
the middle of West-Friesland, an area with much water and many windmills,
but…. try to find a place to take a shot of a Ferrari (any
Ferrari) in front of or next to a windmill.… I tried…
I failed.…
I received a small but nice road-book and the tour’s first
stop was in the little village Avenhorn in the north of the province
to have lunch. During this drive all kind of questions had to be
answered, varying from easy ones to very cryptic definition of things
in that particular neighbourhood. For many participants it seemed
too difficult and that was somehow a bit of a disappointment. Taking
photos was also difficult and I missed the specific distinguishing
features like windmills, ditches, drawbridges and the special horizons
with church-steeples and that sort of things. A pity, although I
got some nice shots!
After lunch every participant had to go back to the start as quickly
as possible and with as few kilometres as possible on the mileage
recorder. For many that proved a big problem because the last ones
arrived a long time after closing time in total darkness. It gave
me and others the time to shoot some more photos on the way back
although it was difficult to catch the cars I wanted, because I
drove back via the highway and others choose the drive through the
country. Anyway there was quite some confusion how to get back,
that’s for sure.
In the end we had a marvellous day with sunny weather and beautiful
cars which were driven very competently and with self-control. All
this made it an unforgettable day for the participating Ferrari
Club members, organizers, photographers and watchers.
