The inaugural 12 race GP Euro Series was held on the 1.9 mile Donington
Park circuit over the Bank Holiday weekend 6/7th May and was co-promoted
by the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association and The Masters Race Series. This
new format historic meeting attracted a significant entry, with much
of the main paddock under open awning allowing the sizeable crowd
to get "up close and personal".
Sponsored by Arbuthnott Latham Private Banking and with classic auctioneers
H and H displaying a forthcoming entry, a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500
(with TT and Brooklands history), entries ranged from ex-pat Rodney
Smith's pre-war ERA R2A (ably driven by Duncan Ricketts) to Jon and
Jason Minshaw's race winning Jaguar E type and Leo Voyazides shrill,
Cosworth DFV powered Lola T280, which was twice a winner.
Also victorious on both days was Duncan Dayton's Lotus 16, shared
between current
American Le Mans series driver and 1988 Le Mans 24 hours victor Andy
Wallace (Sunday) and a hard charging Dayton (Monday).
Race of the weekend was the 2nd World Sportscar Masters, which matched
'60's favourites Brian Redman and Jackie Oliver in Chevron B16s; as
an indication of how hard Redman was trying, he spun at the chicane
twice and entered the pitlane backwards on the second time!
Julian Majzub's unique and unrestored 1956 Frazer Nash Continental
( with the same 3.2 litre BMW V8 power unit that appeared in the 507)
attracted much attention, as did two of Irvine Laidlaw's collection;
a Bugatti Veyron and Rolls Royce Silver Ghost.
Will the car park at RM Auctions inaugural all-Ferrari sale at Maranello
next week be as interesting - see you there to find out?
