In the wake of the F1 spy scandal Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo (pic) has effectively claimed both Drivers' & Constructors' titles for Scuderia Ferrari. Prior to the FIA finding he rejected any notions that the Constructors' victory would be tainted by the disqualification of McLaren, who have been more successful on-track, when he told Gazzetta dello Sport: "If the conditions for an off-track victory were met then we would deserve it, because it would have originated from the presupposition that the winners won through illegal, unsporting, and unfair means." After Lewis Hamilton's victory in appalling conditions in the Japanese Grand Prix, he opened up a twelve point gap at the top of the Drivers' Championship. If he wins the title, as looks increasingly likely, then President di Montezemolo says he should not have, but if he does he owes it to Ferrari. "I still think that in the spying affair it was a big mistake not to disqualify the McLaren drivers as well," the Gazzetta dello Sport website quoted him as saying after Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. "It means that if Hamilton wins the championship, he will also
win it thanks to Ferrari because there is a lot of Ferrari in his car." Click here to return to the Ferrari Happenings page.
