Cheste (Valencia), 2 December – Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo Circuit was the stage for the most eagerly-anticipated spectacle of the four days of the Finali Mondiali Ferrari, the event that traditionally rounds off the Maranello company’s competitive season.
The morning Valencia saw the 458 Challenge cars in the European, Asia Pacific and North American series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli battling on track for the world title. There were also some sessions for the FXX and the 599 XX and for the historic cars run by Maranello’s F1 Clienti department.
Among the activities of the intense programme on show to more than 30,000 people present, there was also an extraordinary parade of 20 historic cars.
Spectacular passing moves and action were the ingredients of the final races of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, which crowned the world champions in the three series. The races saw the title go to Alessandro Balzan, who was already the European champion. Finishing behind the Ferrari Moscow driver in the order were Lorenzo Casè (Motor/Piacenza) and the Venezuelan Enzo Potolicchio (Ferrari Ft.Lauderdale), while among the gentleman drivers of the Coppa Shell the sought-after title went to Alexey Basov in the Ferrari run by the Russian team, who won the championship with a race to spare. Basov finished ahead of Raffaele Giannoni (Motor/Piacenza) and the duo of Daniele and Renato Di Amato (CDP). The racer who shone through in the Coppa Giovani was Patrick Gobbo (Rossocorsa/Pellin) while Fons Scheltema (Kessel Racing) came out on top in the Coppa Gentleman.
The intense round of competition was then followed by an extraordinary show by the stars of the Gran Turismo championships; a parade by the 458 GTs brought to the track by the Italian team AF Corse, which secured the Teams title in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the cars of AIM Autosport and JMW Racing who put in prize-winning performances in the prestigious Le Mans Series and Grand AM champoinships.
Next there were the five models that have raced in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli championship which reached its 20th anniversary this year. Each car was in the hands of one of the Scuderia’s drivers: Marc Genè at the wheel of a 348 Challenge, Davide Rigon on board a F355 Challenge, Jules Bianchi with a 360 Challenge, Felipe Massa in a F430 Challenge and Fernando Alonso driving a 458 Challenge.
The final act of the celebrations saw Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso at the wheel of two F60s. They put in a few laps of the track and a pit stop simulation before the traditional photo together with all the stars of the intense four days in Spain and a final greeting to all the clients and passionate fans present.
