FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP An unusually small entry this year for this major British Hillclimb Championship round saw the first appearance at Gurston of a Ferrari F355 in the very capable hands of Jon Goodwin. Jon has won on scratch every time out this year and looked certain to do so again after heading the practice times on Saturday by half a second from class record holder Richard Allen's 328GTB, with the 355 being 10 mph faster than the 328 through the top speed trap. Geoff Dark (308GT4) was next, ahead of John Marshall's 328GTB. Most unfortunately Marshall was eliminated when he crashed heavily on his third practice, but thankfully he was unhurt. On Sunday Jon Goodwin took the 355 into a huge lead, a second ahead of Allen and Dark, but still three tenths off the record. At close of play Allen closed the 328 within a tenth of the 355's time for second spot and well clear of Dark's GT4. Both Mike Spicer (308GT4) and Stuart Bailey (246GT) recorded their best times to date at Gurston. The speed traps are always interesting at Gurston and a good reflection on actual car performance. At the end of the start line straight Goodwin's 355 pulled 89 mph whilst Baileys 246GT did 77. Over the finish line the 355 was up to 94 whilst the little Dino was on 77. Although he was away racing at Oulton Park, Robin Ward still leads the Championship tables but Jon Goodwin has now moved into second place as a result of Marshall's failure to score points at Gurston. From now on points are being dropped and the remainder of the Championship should provide some excitement! The next round of the Championship takes place at Loton Park on 17th September.
