FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP After a grey start the day become hot, sunny and eventful. Upon arrival Robin Ashley tried to cure his Dino's misfire by changing the plugs. John Dobson was there with his much too shiny 328 complete with carbon fibre timing strut. The meeting, however, looked set for a good battle between Geoffrey Rollason (360) and Jon Goodwin (355). First practice was uneventful apart from Ashley's persistent misfire and Robin Ward's excursion across the grass at Loggerheads in his 308GTB. John Marshall (328GTB) set his fastest time of the day and new boys Nick Frost (348GTC) and Peter Hayman (512TR) had steady runs. Still plagued by his misfire Robin Ashley decided to call it a day and headed home. Second practice was steady for most people, apart from Geoffrey Rollason going quickly, Jon Goodwin rolling forward at the start losing five seconds, and Nick Frost failing. Well into the afternoon the timed runs got underway with plenty of action. Goodwin set a new record at 59.98 with Rollason only six hundredths of a second behind. Brian Jackson (355/Ch) had a huge spin on the fastest section of the course and Ward outbraked himself at the end of the long straight and slid wide over the grass. On the second timed run it was Richard Baker's turn for a spin in the same place that Robin had been off. Geoff Dark (308GT4), John Dobson and John Marshall improved slightly. Ward improved to take third place overall and Frost and Hayman improved greatly on their previous times. Jackson put in a steady run Amongst the front-runners Rollason failed to improve on his previous time and Jon Goodwin rolled forward on the start again to post the slowest 0-64ft time. This meant that for both of them the first run times would have to count. The day belonged decisively to Goodwin, with the first-ever sub-60 sec. run by a Ferrari. He will be good to watch at the next round at Harewood, especially to see if Christian Mineeff's long-standing Ferrari record can finally be wrested away from him. Given dry conditions that record will almost certainly fall. Even with the PEPs
applied Goodwin took maximum points ahead of Ward and Rollason. In the
Championship, however, Ward still leads ahead of Marshall but with Goodwin
moving ever closer in third place.
