FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP This year's second encounter at Harewood was eagerly awaited. Would Jon Goodwin be able to maintain his winning streak? And would he be the one to finally break Christian Mineeff's Ferrari record? As always, the venue was popular and a large entry was received for the one-day meeting. The Ferrari class also had the rare honour of having current RAC Hillclimb Champion David Grace driving Richard Baker's 308GT4. Practice times were immediately quick but that possibly had something to do with nearly all the contenders completing the Hillclimb School the day before! Jon Goodwin (355GTS) was easily quickest, ahead of Robin Ward (308GTB) and local maestro Simon Clark (328GTB). Also showing serious intent were Brian Jackson in his de-modified 355 Challenge and Nick Frost in the delectable 348GTC. Warm but breezy weather greeted the contestants as they lined up for their first competitive runs immediately after the lunch break. Goodwin pulled out every stop he had and set a magnificent 65.96 sec. time, which not only proved the winning time of the day but also established a new Ferrari record, being 0.3 seconds quicker than Mineeff's previous mark. Ward was second quickest but such was Goodwin's pace that he was 1.3 seconds behind. Jackson was third in his 355, just a little ahead of Frost's 348. Simon Clark was the fourth driver in the 67-sec. mark and behind him three drivers were separated by just two thousandths of a second - Baker, Peter Hayman (512TR) and Grace. By the time of the second runs the track conditions had cooled somewhat but despite this a number of Ferrari drivers improved their times. Grace moved up into sixth place but only marginally (and therefore decently) ahead of the car's owner. Clark went slower and had to rely on his first run to give him fifth place and Robin Ward went off at the final corner and also did not improve, leaving him in fourth. Jackson knocked 0.2 seconds off his time but the undoubted star of the second runs was Frost, who took nearly a second off his time to leapfrog Jackson and end up second overall. Goodwin was also slower on his second run but his first run time was easily quick enough to take his fourth win in a row. After the PEP percentages had been applied, Robin Ward took the maximum 20 Championship points, with Robin Ashley (246GT) and Clark next up. For all his efforts, Goodwin took home merely 13 and this means that Ward still lies solidly at the top of the Championship table and, if he keeps it all together, looks unlikely to be caught. Round 10 of the
13 round championship takes place at Gurston Down on 26/27th August.
