FERRARI
HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP It was, amazingly, a dry meeting at this spectacular and daunting course. A good entry of ten Ferraris was mostly heavy metal, with three F355s, two 348s and a 512TR to overwhelm the smaller engined tipos. Jon Goodwin, a rare sight this season, looked favourite with his red F355GTS, and sure enough he headed the practice times, though Brian Jackson was not far behind in his 355. On the competitive runs Jon Goodwin fairly stormed off, setting a new class record and taking the maximum point score too. Brian Jackson ran strongly about half a second back, with your reporter third, over a second off Goodwin's time. I was out for the first time in my re-acquired F355, and very nice it was too! Peter Hayman soon got the hang of Longleat, punching his big car up nearly as fast as my 355, to win the Club handicap and finish nearly a second ahead of points rival Nick Frost (348GTC). Nick, new here too, made it home ahead of Geoff Dark's 308GT4, the quickest of the smaller cars. richard Prior put his 348ts next, to head Mike Spicer's 308GTB comfortably, Mike in turn having a useful margin over Philip Whitehead's 328GTB and Jos van de Perres' 308GTS. The cumulative points update looks interesting, with one rounds still to go. With scores now being dropped series leader Geoff Dark is only four points ahead of Nick Frost, so Nick is in with a chance at Curborough, though if our August round there was any guide he will need a dry meeting!
