FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 8 : GURSTON DOWN

Gurston is a popular hill and recently was the scene of the Ferrari Club Hillclimb School which 20 or so Club Members attended. The event itself was another of those "iffy" weather days as 11 Ferraris gathered in the early morning in the Gurston paddock.

During first practice the course was a little damp and the order was Richard Allen (328GTB), Richard Baker (308GT4) and Geoff Dark, back in his 308GT4 after another engine re-build. By the time the second practice runs had been completed an on-form Richard Barnett (328GTS) had matched Allen's time to the hundredth. John Marshall (328GTB) was third quickest at that stage.

On the first race runs Richard Allen had severe gear selection problems and managed to shift from first to fourth. He then tried to get second but it would not have it either so it was third or nothing as he dribbled down to Hollow. By the time he made it back into the top paddock a whole raft of drivers had gone past, pushing him down to fifth - pretty worrying for him as rain was likely.

Sure enough the rain came during the afternoon and Allen had no chance of salvaging a respectable result. The track remained thoroughly wet for the second runs and nobody could match their first run times.

The final result was an outstanding win for Richard Barnett, narrowly ahead of John Marshall, Geoff Dark and Len Watson. With the PEP factors taken into consideration, Dark took the maximum Championship points ahead of Barnett and Marshall.
