FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 10 : LOTON PARK

Ten Ferraris arrived at this attractive venue close to the Welsh borders. The girl at sign-on smiled and said it would be "warm and dry the whole day". Not cold, maybe, but a fine drizzle soon dampened things down and set the tone for the meeting.

Practice runs were dominated by Geoffrey Rollason (F355) ahead of Geoff Dark and Richard Baker in their 308GT4s. This is Geoffrey's last event with his current 355 - he takes delivery of a brand-new F1 version early next year. Fortunately his current car will pass into the hands of Jon Goodwin, who will continue using it on the hills.

The first runs were dry but slippery and, with the rain coming later, these were the ones that counted. Rollason took a commanding lead some two and a half seconds ahead of Richard Baker, who was followed by Len Watson (328GTS) in third place. John Swift (308GTB) came next, handicapped by a badly fluffing engine, just ahead of the flying Robin Ashley in his Dino GTS. Geoff Dark, normally a front-runner, blew it all with a mighty spin at the top of the hill.

The wet second runs were a mere formality, although Dark posted a time which gave him useful Championship points. With the PEP factors applied, Ashley took the maximum points, followed by Rollason and Baker.

The highlight for the Ferrari crowd was the appearance of Jon Goodwin in his vast 25 year-old Rolls Royce in which he intends to tackle the London to Cape Town rally later this year. It also looked ideal for weddings!
