PIRELLI MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 10 : SNETTERTON : 6
AUGUST 2000
PADDOCK STORIES
- Pre-race scrutineerig almost became the undoing of Hetherington's
F50. The scrutes didn't like the car's two rollover hoops and insisted
on seeing the relevant FIA documentation, which unfortunately was
not available. After much squabbling they eventually allowed the car
to run in qualifying only but then relented further and allowed it
to take part in the race.
- One of the Mortimer lads, David Ingram-Hill, had a frightening bash
during qualifying in his 355 and ended up in Norwich Infirmary for
a precautionary examination. He was fine and returned later to the
circuit but the car was obviously hors de combat for the race.
- Jim and Janet Race performed magnificently in feeding and refreshing
all the Ferrari troops, all out of their little caravan. There is
most definitely a penchant and a talent there which has been enjoyed
by Club members over the last few years.
- Readers of John Swift's Competition News will be bemused to read
his story about the ricocheting seat in his 308. Under braking he
had his nose up against the dashboard but on accelerating he found
himself sitting somewhere in the back wondering where the steering
wheel had gone. He obviously managed to get the hang of it in the
end because his best race lap was over 5 seconds quicker than he had
done in qualifying.
- Joint sponsors, Pirelli, again had a fine display of their tyres
available, with Steve Bradwick in attendance. It is always good to
see their efforts in this direction and their stand will always be
the first port of call when it comes to tyres, not just for the racers
but also for the many road-going Ferraris which use their excellent
high-performance products.
- John Seale was an unfortunate non-starter when his engine blew yet
again during testing prior to the event. That was the third time this
year. His ultra-quick 355/Ch could well have been a match for Cosby
and Hetherington. It was Seale, remember, who won the previous race
at the quick Thruxton circuit.
- The tight points situation in the "S" class saw bewildering to-ing
and fro-ing in the paddock as both Alan Cosby and Ian Hetherington
tried to decide how many of the remaining rounds they would do. With
dropped scores they are, in fact, neck and neck and therefore the
remaining races will see some memorable competition.
