PIRELLI MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 6 : SILVERSTONE : 24
JUNE 2000
PADDOCK STORIES
- Ben Orza had a cracking good race, finishing seventh overall and
fourth amongst the Challenge cars. His recent races in a Marcos in
the Privilege GT series have obviously done him a whole power of good.
- You would think a Testarossa would be a fairly porky beast but Silverstone
was not the first time that the Zest car has been in weight trouble.
Last year at Zandvoort it was found to be some 23 kilos below the
limit. At least this has been reduced by nearly a half to just 12
kilos. Shame that, because this would have been Nick May's first win
in the PMFC.
- John Swift steered his way through the various troubles and, with
his engine sounding a lot better than recently, he came in eighth
overall and a strong third in the "S" class. He now lies third in
the championship tables, just one point behind the second placed 308
of Peter Lowe.
- The formation lap caused some chagrin as Nick May's Testarossa shot
into a distant lead, leaving the rest of the field far behind him.
This caused Ian Hetherington to lodge a protest with the Clerk of
the Course because he felt he was not able to adequately warm his
tyres prior to the start. The Testarossa's eventual exclusion made
the protest irrelevant.
- Several of the Ferraris also took part in the Intermarque championship
race on the same day. Alan Cosby took a great sixth overall and Ian
Hetherington finished ninth. John Pogson's F40 was an unfortunate
non-starter with clutch problems. It would have been interesting to
see him go head-to-head with the F50 and F512M.
