- The
lure of the old Nordschleife was obviously too great to resist and
various attempts were made to conquer it. David Ashburn went to the
Pirelli truck to try and get some slicks for his Bentley, the SCS
lot went round seven-up in a Shogun and Mineeff's BMW was particularly
unfortunate as he got one of the SRWC drivers to show him how it ought
to be done. A gently smouldering car and whimpering passenger was returned to the paddock.
- The
ever-popular Phil Nuttall announced that he would be retiring from
racing at the end of the season and he held a splendid paddock BBQ
on Saturday night for all the PMFC people. The paddock was a very
cold place but it stayed dry and the many bottles of red wine and
beer soon had everybody warm, but if we hear that endlessly-played
CD again it might end up where the sun don't shine!
- The
Club's busy photographer, Paul Jarmyn, finally made the plunge into
digital photography and arrived clutching the latest Nikon gizmo which
reputedly cost the equivalent of a modest annual racing budget. The
pictures were quickly burned on to a CD and our website now has some
150 photos to choose from. All a big change from just a few years
ago when we had to hunt around, weeks later, for any snaps that people
had taken.
- Alarmingly
there was much consulting of the Autosport Circuit Guide. With great
authority Rod Carman said "the entry at the final corner is at
the marker and the exit is on the chevrons, or is it the other way
round?" Inevitably he spun precisely there.
- One
mustn't smile at other peoples' misfortune but there was a little
bit of mirth in the paddock as Martin Shaw took the 360 Challenge
out on to the track from the assembly area and promptly whacked the
wall backwards. Another lesson learnt about cold tyres.
- The
Culver team, normally a model of calm efficiency, went a little loopy
as they strapped a set of slicks on for one of the wettest races ever
seen. Gary said afterwards that he had seen a bit of clear sky in
the distance but the rest of us thought it must just have been a reflection
off the streaming track. To make matters worse he was then docked
30 seconds for passing under a yellow flag, but all credit to him
for keeping it pointing in vaguely the right direction. His quickest
lap was 2 minutes 39 seconds, which compares with 2 minutes 13 seconds
by the quickest of the rain-tyred 355s, that of David Ashburn.
- At
last Swifty was seen out in something reasonably modern. With his own
308 still hors de combat David Ashburn kindly lent him his
"O" class 355 and it ran faultlessly throughout the long
weekend. Maybe this will be another tiny encouragement to move to
something less ancient and creaky.
- Clive
Hickman and Paul Markwick from Series sponsors Ricardo were welcome
visitors at the Ring, together with important BMW customers. The Ricardo
guys were immediately assigned the task of selecting the best turned
out car for the Wine and Beer award and this went to Phil Nuttall's
355/Ch.
