  • With the possibility that Nathan Kinch could still pinch the Maranello Championship from him, Ian Hetherington's SCS team took no chances and brought along David Ward's 360/Ch as a spare. In the event it wasn't needed as Ian's own car ran faultlessly. And Nathan never showed up, being busy with important Challenge stuff in Monza.

  • There has to be some kind of record here: Richard Allen's completely standard 328GTB has retired with mysterious gremlins from every single race entered. There don't appear to be many "experts" left in the country that Richard has not consulted and the bits that have been swapped would just about build a second car. Some more theories are now being tried out......Feng Shui being one, although Richard was also seen trying acapuncture with what looked suspiciously like matches.
  • An eruption of oil smoke in practice signalled the end of yet another creaky 308 engine - this time Duncan McKay's, with a well-ventilated block. He wisely decided to end the racing days of this venerable car (a past Maranello series winner!) and went off and bought Rod Carmans 355/Ch. Have we now seen the last of this overaged and overworn tipo in the PMFC?

  • Jim and Janet Race took over hospitality duties from the usual Moodies people, and did an excellent job just like last year. They set up shop in the paddock by the Ferraris and the close proximity and excellent fare were welcomed by all the teams.

  • Lap records took a bit of a pounding. Where do they all get it from? Tony Jones took 1.5 seconds off Marco Attard's 355/Ch record, Hether's "S" class time was also handily under Alan Cosby's previous record but there was nothing doing in the "O" class. Shaun Powell's time from last year was still nearly four seconds quicker than this year's "O" boys managed

  • Trailers are notoriously wayward devices but Swifty actually managed to back his into two separate objects in the paddock. Rumour has it that the second one was someone's pride and joy, a Mercedes no less. Anyone got a pic of the incident?

  • As befits an end of season meeting, the amount of paddock business done in trading racing cars was phenomenal. Everyone was, of course, sworn to secrecy and there was lots of "don't tell anyone but.....". Suffice it to say that in 2002 there will be lots of 360/Chs, lots of 355/Chs and so far four names have been mentioned in connection with the 550 "Challenge" version recently approved by the PMFC Technical & Regulatory Committee.
