  • One great plus of Castle Combe is that it really attracts the spectators. Walking around it is not difficult to see why. From the banking at Quarry you are close to the action and the cars look very fast; it is also possible to see almost all the way round the circuit to follow the race. For the drivers it is a bumpy ride which has not been improved by the addition of two chicanes. It is also a dangerous circuit and we have seen some of our biggest accidents there over the years.
  • The small grid size was particularly noticeable in the ailing O-class with only two entries. This class has long been seen as the first gentle step into Club competition by members and as such it has worked well over the years with many well-known Ferrari racers learning their skills there. It is such a very important class that the Club's Tech & Regs committee must try hard to encourage new entries next year.
  • Hobbling around the paddock was Shaun Powell, his Spa war wounds well strapped up and pinned. He'll be out of action for a while just as he was moving up in the C-class and will probably miss the rest of the season. Swifty presented him with his Spa trophies, and Shaun was later spotted in deep conversation with John Avery. Will his 355/Ch soon appear as yet another Damax car?

  • Sometimes one feels that certain drivers need to get the message. John Taylor has had a miserable time with various modified cars over recent years. Zero reliability, plus accidents, would have put off a lesser racer than John. The old modified cars can be reliable and fast but need never-ending fettling without which they can be a zero-reward recipe for disaster. John needs to get into a Factory Challenge car (usually no trouble at all) and quick!

  • The Wren transporter disgorged Kevin Wilkins' lovely 355/Ch complete with For Sale sticker. This is the ex-John Seale car which the latter had from new, includes all the '98 mods, and is a rare RHD. Yours for a mere £58,000.

  • Nathan Kinch was an unfortunate non-combatant with one of the family 360/Ch's. A bout of food-poisoning whilst testing on the Friday laid him so low that he had to go home.

  • David Ashburn not only had his 355/Ch there but, in identical livery to confuse car spotters, his O-class 355 as well. Apparently Rory Fordyce was down to drive it but in pre-event testing he didn't get on with it and decided not to take up the drive.

  • Still no sign of that dratted horse. Alan Cosby went up and down the paddock a fair few times apparently making sure it wasn't around anywhere but no-one seems to have seen it. Whisked off to New York after it bolted at Spa, its next appearance is eagerly awaited, not least by Alan.
