GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 2 : BRANDS HATCH : 2 MAY 1999
PADDOCK STORIES
- A whole load of firsts here: Ian Hetherington's first GMFC win, the first race win by an F50 (probably on a world-wide basis), and the first GMFC win by that bastion of Ferrari propulsion- the V12 engine.
- The short Indy circuit, with 25 starters and large speed differentials, highlighted a not always perfect use of mirrors by some of those being lapped. The leading trio were almost brought to a standstill at one stage by wandering back-markers oblivious of 1500 hp rushing up behind.
- The day before the Challenge race, no less than 15 Ferraris took part in the Ferrari v. Porsche Challenge which was handsomely won by the Italian marque, John Pogson taking an excellent second overall in the F40. Obviously they all wanted additional practice before the GMFC race because the later Intermarque race only had four Ferraris in our team.
- Ian Hetherington's F50 again had clutch problems during the Ferrari v. Porsche race. The enormous, usually two-day, job of changing the clutch was carried out by Martin Shaw's Specialised Cars team in just three hours. It was unnerving seeing the F50 lying in two halves as they worked away.
- The best way to get yourself almost banned from a racing circuit is to have an altercation with the ticket girl over paddock passes. This is what one team tried and were wide-eyed with surprise as the entire team found itself in front of the Clerk of the Course. Much explaining and apologising saw the situation diffused but it was a close thing.
- RAC scrutineer John May was having a busy day again and sealed the engines of Marco Attard and Bruno Cappuccini's 355/Chs for routine examination.
