Ferrari and Shell together until 2005
Ferrari's President Luca di Montezemolo and Shell's Group Managing Director and CEO Oil Products Paul
Skinner have signed a deal to extend their successful Formula 1 partnership for another five years.
The contract runs until the end of the 2005 Formula 1 season and is more than just a sponsorship
agreement. The famous Shell logo will continue to adorn the Ferrari nosecones, while the
partnership also covers the close technological co-operation between the two companies which has
been an important part in their relationship so far.
The technical teams from Shell and Ferrari work very closely together. Shell supplies the Formula
1 team with motor oils and low sulphur gasoline, using products developed specifically for the
Ferrari engines in its own laboratories. At every Grand Prix scientists from Shell carry out
on-the-spot fuel and lubricants checks using a unique mobile laboratory located in the Ferrari
pits and the two companies also work together closely to develop the Ferrari engines during the
pre-season preparations.
"To survive as one of the leading Formula 1 teams, we need a fuels partner that is reliable,
highly motivated and a world leader in technical innovation," said Montezemolo. "Shell is the
perfect partner for us as their commitment and contribution go well beyond supplying the fuels
and lubricants we need. They are now firmly established as a vital part of our Formula 1 campaign."
"Ferrari's success in Formula 1 events is a very visible way for us to show millions of customers
around the world the excellence of our products," Paul Skinner explained. "Ferrari shares our
drive for technical innovation and our research support for their Formula 1 team helps us develop
new products for our customers".
The new agreement also includes on-pack Ferrari endorsements for selected Shell products.
All Ferrari road cars which leave the plant in Maranello will be filled with Shell fuel,
lubricants and greases. Customer awareness of Shell's partnership with Ferrari will be raised w
ith new TV commercials, retail forecourt promotions and extensive merchandising. Shell Helix engine
oils will be advertised at the Formula 1 tracks.
