Ferrari Out Of Luck At Daytona
The Ferrari 333 SPs were out of luck in the opening round of the Grand American Road Racing series, the Daytona 24 Hours. All three cars entered were forced to retire during the first third of the race.
The Cavallino cars were on the pace however, both in qualifying and in the race, with second place on the grid going to the Team Risi 333SP driven by Alex Caffi, Allan McNish, Ralf Kelleners and Domenico Schiattarella. However, Caffi spun on the opening lap which dropped him down the order, until an engine problem after 162 laps eventually put it out of the running. The Team Doran car, driven by Didier Theys, Mauro Baldi, Freddy Lienhard and Ross Bentley was forced to stop with a fire in the airbox, when it was leading the race after 132 laps. The Auto Sports Racing car, driven by Calderari, Bryner, M. Zadra, Rosenblad, A. Zadra, did not last much longer, going out on lap 203 with gearbox problems.
Final victory went to the Viper of Olivier Beretta, Karl Wendlinger and Dominique Dupuy, followed by two more GT cars: the Chevrolet Corvette of Bell-Fellows-Kneifel and another Viper of Donohue-Belloc-Amorim.
