Mattel Gets Into Gear
Over a year ago it was announced that Mattel had signed an exclusive deal with Ferrari SpA to take over the marketing rights for all Ferrari scale models, as well as a wide range of toys and other collectibles. This brought much consternation to fans of Ferrari scale models as it seemed to be the end of the road for manufacturers such as Bang, Minichamps, Brumm, Tamiya and Burago. On top of this came the realisation that Mattel only produced a few Ferrari scale models and they were not particularly good…..However, news soon emerged that Mattel had, in fact, been appointed to manage the Ferrari trade marks and that other model manufacturers could indeed take out licences to continue the manufacture of their collectors' items. The only major model manufacturer who has so far announced the cessation of their Ferrari model-making is the Japanese firm, Tamiya.Further good news is that Mattel have now themselves brought out a range of excellent Ferrari models, which include current as well as classic tipos.
