Is Montezemolo Leaving Ferrari?
9.5.01

In the 8th May edition of La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Silvio Berlusconi, the leader of the Italian Freedom Party which is expected to play a leading role in the next Government after the elections on 13 May, is reported to have said that Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo will be offered a Ministerial post.

Today, Ferrari issued a statement from Montezemolo which said: " I wish to sincerely thank Mr. Berlusconi for his words. However, I feel it is right and proper that I refrain from comment at the moment. We will speak about it next week. We are working hard at this time at Ferrari because the coming weekend is very important for us, even if there are other matters taking place which are of even greater importance for our country."

The wording of the statement sounds ominously that, if offered such a post, he would take it.

This would be a surprise because it had been speculated that Montezemolo would eventually lead a separate stockmarket flotation of Ferrari/Maserati when Fiat eventually divest. The recent Forbes article on Montezemolo has calculated that Ferrari could be valued at $1.3 billion without even considering the inherent value of the brand.
