FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 10 : HAREWOOD : 8 AUGUST 1999

Another strong Ferrari entry paid a second visit to Simon Clark's personal playground. The weather was cool and remained dry, even though torrential rain fell just about everywhere else. The sun clearly shines on the righteous.

An interesting contest looked on the cards, especially between Clark's 328GTB and Robin Ward's quick 308GTB. On top of this was the perennial question, whether Clarky could finally achieve the ambition of breaking Christian Mineeff's 66-sec Ferrari record set way back in 1992.

In practice, Ward produced an absolute stormer in the 67-sec bracket but he was closely followed by Clark who was only a tenth behind. John Marshall (328GTB) practised third quickest, ahead of Richard Allen's similar tipo. Lurking menacingly was Nick Frost's 348GTC and Richard Baker's 308GT4.

Three competitive runs were on offer in the afternoon. Clark's opening shot of 67.75 seconds was to be the winner and Ward had to wait until the third runs before setting his best time of 68.26 seconds to take second place. On that third run Baker dramatically returned to his stunning Harewood form from last year and took a strong third place, only half a second behind Ward.

Nick Frost surely drove his best race yet to take fourth, ahead of Watson and Allen. Marshall was not able to reproduce his practice form and slipped down to seventh place but this was still a commendable achievement in the highly competitive 15-car class.

Although he again failed to break Mineeff's class record, Clark's win was good enough to give him the maximum PEP points, with Ward, Baker and Frost taking the next positions. Robin Ashley's Dino GTS took a useful collection of points home and Len Watson also had a trophy-laden day as the winner of the Club's handicap competition as well as the Paddock Cup.

As far as the cumulative points are concerned, the situation now becomes interesting as drivers are beginning to reach the maximum number of eight scores to count for the Championship. Robin Ward leads, ahead of John Marshall, but Geoff Dark, who did not compete at Harewood, is handily placed at fourth in the league table having done only five events so far. He could be the one to watch come the end of the season.
