FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 3 : ISLE OF MAN : 13/14/15 MAY 1999

Nine Ferrari drivers took the plunge again and headed for the Isle of Man's triple-header hillclimb, held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 13th, 14th and 15th May. The hills ranged from the somewhat wind-swept Sloc, seriously fast with near 90 mph speeds, to the wonderful Lerghy Frissel (2.2 km long) which forms part of the TT course coming out of Ramsey.

The best two results are amalgamated to form a final finishing order and the championship points are thus awarded for the best two results out of three.

The star of the weekend was undoubtedly Robin Ward in his extremely rapid 308GTB, who handsomely won the Ferrari class at all three events. Terry Esom (328GTB), the previous year's winner, gave Ward chase to finish second in each of the events.

Len Watson (328GTS) took third at Sloc and Creg Ny Baa but at Lerghy Frissel John Marshall (328GTB) turned up the wick mightily and took third place only closely behind Esom.

Richard Baker (308GT4) ended up with two fourths and a fifth and he also generously lent his car to John Dobson to use after the latter's clutch failed on the first day.

With the PEP factors applied, Robin Ward obviously took the maximum 20 points, followed by Esom on 17 and Watson on 15.

As in the previous year, the unanimous verdict from the competitors was that the Three Hills Challenge was the best event in the calendar - friendly organisers, a wonderfully varied collection of hills and tremendous value in being able to practice and race three different hills in three consecutive days.

After three rounds of the Championship, Robin Ward is holding a substantial lead in the points table but John Marshall and Len Watson are only one point apart in second and third places.
