FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 8 : LOTON PARK: 17 JULY 1999

A smaller Ferrari contingent than usual shrunk to just seven runners after Robin Ashley withdrew. There was quality if not quantity exemplified by the two F355's of Geoffrey Rollason and Roger Hickman. In the absence of Jon Goodwin, a previous Ferrari class winner here, Rollason looked set for an easy time, though he did have his own class record set with his floor shift 355 to aim at. Weather-wise things were looking good, with sun shy Richard Baker and Len Watson sheltering under their umbrellas. No rest for Roger Hickman though as an eagle eyed scrutineer spotted his crash hat was well past it's sell by date, not noticed incidentally by scrutineers at Prescott and Shelsley. Roger, who does not live far away had to whip off his strut etc and dive off home for a replacement, just making it back in time for practice.

Geoffrey Rollason's first run up Loton was to be his best of the meeting, about half a second off his own record. By the time practice was through he enjoyed a huge margin over Robin Ward (308GTB) on his first visit here and Len Watson (328GTS), both on near identical times. Brian Jackson armed with his faithful 308GTB "BOB" was next, heading Richard Baker, whose exuberance with his 308GT4 had involved some traditional off piste motoring! Richards' rival, John Dobson, was close behind with his GT4,whilst Roger Hickman had his 355 handily placed just ahead of Brian's 308,after making an unusually fast 0-64ft time for one of these tipos.

The informed opinion was that grip was not up to normal levels for Loton, but even so our men all did their level best. Geoffrey Rollason took the class win, but complained of inability to get first gear for Fallow, bogging down as a result. Len Watson took second on scratch with his best time to date to head off Robin Ward who did manage to pick up the maximum points on offer as consolation. Brian Jackson put in his best ever to comfortably head Richard Baker. Roger Hickman meanwhile just squeaked being red lamp carrier as he headed Dobson by a couple of hundredths.
