FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 9 : WROUGHTON: 25 JULY 1999

Last season there were sixteen Ferraris at this meeting, albeit much later in the season. Wroughton is not a patch on South Cerney, the previous venue used by organising club Cirencester C.C. Cerney was lost due to the deterioration of the surface of the airfield perimeter track. Now Wroughton is to be dug up for development.

On the registration forms submitted at the beginning of the season seventeen competitors put down they were doing this meeting. Even though the date was changed it is still surprising that only four actually entered, reflecting the less than wonderful course and facilities.

It turned out to be none too well organised either with all sorts of delays, ensuring that the first competitive runs were not 'til 3.20pm and final runs at 5.20. Robin Ward had blitzed this event last year and he headed the practice time sheet with his 308GTB. Len Watson was the only other man on the same planet with his 328GTS, about three seconds back. Jos van de Perre's 308GTS is relatively standard and he had little hope of keeping in touch with these two but managed to keep Stuart Baileys 246GT under control. Robin, a determined sort of chap had made contact with the second chicane, sustaining some damage to the front of his 308.

Brian Jackson had turned out with his F355C which is on the way back to standard spec. Entered in "road going over 2000cc", Brian was transferred to the "modified "class due to his strange tyres. His best time was a pretty useful 107.06 well ahead of Graham Reeder's time here last year with his F355 "O" Class car.

The agreeable sunshine clouded over in the afternoon but it remained dry. Robin Ward continued on his winning way taking the modest maximum points. Len Watson improved dramatically to close the gap, but was still about one and a half seconds adrift. Jos too chipped away at his times, as did Stuart Bailey, both of them considerably improving over last year.
