FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT : ROUND 2 : ISLE OF MAN

The second round of the 1998 Ferrari Hillclimb Championship on the Isle of Man was a triple-header, with three different hills being tackled in the three days available. Six Ferraris made the trip and the aggregate result of all three events was used to calculate the overall winner and, of course, the Championship points position.

Sloc - 16th April

Richard Baker (308GT4) was quickest in practice and dominated the results on this 0.8 mile strip of windswept mountain road. The weather had a mighty hand in the proceedings, with rain turning to heavy sleet turning to sunshine. Jon Goodwin (Mondial) was next up, over a second behind, with Terry Esom (328GTB) in third. His PEP factor consolidated Richard's clear win on this event.

Creg Ny Baa - 17th April

This is an extremely fast hill, with only one real corner and the surface was so bumpy that it caused some damage to the underneath of the Ferraris, in particular to Jon Goodwin's Mondial, which lost bits of bodywork and broke its battery tray. This time it was Scott Winnard (328GTB) who won on scratch from Terry Esom (308GTB) and Richard Baker. With the PEP factor taken into account, however, it was once again Richard who took the points win.

Lerghy Frissel - 18th April

The third event produced yet another winner and this time it was Jon Goodwin in his Mondial who took the fastest time of all the Ferraris. In second place on scratch was Terry Esom, with two very consistent runs. Even with the PEP factor taken into account Jon Goodwin took the points win and spoilt what might otherwise have been a clean sweep by Richard Baker.

The consolidated result of all three events showed that Terry Esom won the award for being cumulative fastest of the Ferraris but Richard Baker took the maximum Championship points with his very consistent performances at all three events. It had been a most enjoyable weekend and provisional dates of 13th-16th May have already been booked for 1999.
