GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 3 : CASTLE COMBE : 31 MAY 1999
PADDOCK STORIES
- After Neil Woodford rendered his 355 hors de combat during qualifying, he offered his services to the circuit as a marshall. Unfortunately his nominated post was at Quarry Corner and he was seen to be one of the many marshalls running for their lives, with Bowler's F40 in low flying pursuit.
- The Castle Combe organisers were clearly pleased with the annual Ferrari visit and quite rightly too. The race programme gave the Ferraris much prominence under the headline "The Maranello Marvels Return to Castle Combe".
- The Owners' Club hospitality marquee was a most popular venue and it was good to see representatives from Goodyear, Ricardo and Adams Associates enjoying the atmosphere with their guests.
- Three more newcomers to the series appeared on the grid. Simon Bartholomew (F355) and Andy Duncan (348tb) acquitted themselves well during the race but John Avery's 328GTB was unfortunately one of those involved in the qualifying fracas and he became a non-starter. Hopefully we will soon see him back again.
- Driving standards came in for much criticism by the drivers in the paddock afterwards, although no adverse Observers reports were submitted. It is always difficult to handle these types of situations but it to be hoped that the GMFC management will come down heavily upon any driver being reported before more damage ensues.
- The tipo profile of the series continues to change dramatically in favour of the more current models. Seventeen of the 32-car entry were F355s and only four "M" class 308s appeared - at one time they used to dominate the grid. The crowd pleasers, however, were undoubtedly the "supercars" - the F40s, F50 and the two flat 12s.
