GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 5 : SNETTERTON : 20 JUNE 1999

PADDOCK STORIES

  • Following the failure to agree sensible financial terms with Brands Hatch Leisure, there was no Moodies hospitality unit. However, to the rescue came PHR members Jim and Janet Race, who put on an astonishing spread out of their caravan for all the competitors and members to enjoy. It was one of the highlights of the day.

  • Who speaks with forked tongue? Poggy thought the Testarossa was "so much quicker in a straight line". Davids' version was that the F40 was "a lot faster on the straight".

  • In the accompanying Porsche versus Ferrari race, Fred Moss strapped a set of Bruno Cappuccini's slicks on to his "O" class 355 and proceeded to do serious damage to the egos of many Porsche drivers as he blasted around at Challenge car speeds. Pogson's F40 took a great second overall in this race but unfortunately as a team effort the Porsches won the day.

  • Seems a shame to have to address this subject but it is pleasing to report that this was the first race this year when there were no complaints about robust driving standards. Let's hope it stays that way in what is supposed to be a friendly Club series.

  • Good to see old friend Mike Millard around with his Boxer now in Inter-Marque spec. Although he was shunted into retirement at the start of the race, his grid time of 1:14.88 compared very nicely with Pogsons's GMFC F40 time of 1:15.56. At the Donington short course the Boxer, in its newly lightened form, went around in 1:16 compared to the GMFC record of 1:18 held by Paul Ciardiello.

  • After Stuart Bowler's F40 recalcitrant run at Snetterton, it was taken to Donington on the following Wednesday for the Graypaul track day and ran like the proverbial Swiss watch. Let's hope the cure remains permanent.
