GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 6 & 7 : ZANDVOORT : 3/4 JULY 1999

PADDOCK STORIES

  • It used to live on top of his motorhome but Shaun Powell's air-conditioning unit was neatly scraped off by the low tunnel height as he was pulling into the paddock. What a thing to happen in the middle of summer! Better use the other tunnel next time, Shaun.

  • The local scrutineers seemed to be there more for their own pleasure. The Dutch rule book and the MSA Blue Book don't always match and there were numerous discussions about the finer points of technical regulations. Our own John May eventually prevailed but there was lots of swapping of components between cars to satisfy the niggly checkers.

  • Ben Orsa turned up in the hope of being allowed to race despite not having the required license up-grade. Needless-to-say, there was little chance of swinging this past officialdom.

  • Car keys and David Ashburn were having a singularly bad time at Zandvoort. His racer arrived Friday on the trailer but the keys of the 355 were back in London. Just to spice things up, he then locked his tow vehicle with the keys dangling safely inside. Eyes were averted whilst people who apparently know about these things broke into both vehicles.

  • The delights of night-time Amsterdam were, of course, explored by a few, especially on Friday night. We have their names, and snapshots could be made available…..

  • They know how to reward the winners over there. Podium ceremonies included big bunches of flowers, large trophies and national anthems, but the real treat came in the form of dolly birds from the Dutch version of Playboy. Are you watching, AMOC?
