GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 9 : CROFT 21/22 AUGUST 1999

PADDOCK STORIES

  • The proliferation of possible events for a Ferrari at Croft brought both pleasure and brickbats. Those who could afford it enjoyed all the extra practice of taking part in other races, as well as private testing on the Friday, but some on tighter budgets felt that this left them at a disadvantage in the GMFC race.

  • When Colin Davids’ Testarossa ended up in the gravel following the first lap fracas it was left there for all to see until the end of the meeting. Reminded me of the time when dinged cars were deliberately left by the side of German roads as a warning to others. Until, that is, they discovered that these sometimes-expensive Mercs and BMWs made excellent spare parts sources for the general population….

  • Old GMFC friends Mike Millard and Peter Cook were in opposing teams during the Ferrari vs. Porsche race and ended up crunching into each other, Millard’s 512 Boxer coming off the worst compared with Cook’s Porsche GT2. Although the Ferraris often struggle a little in the Inter-Marque races, it is nice to record that this time our team finished second to the Porsches. A good turn out of Ferraris makes all the difference to the team result.

  • Nicky P-B and Marco Attard were racing so hard at the end that they never saw the chequered flag and were most surprised to come across a very slow Neil Woodford with his arm out of the window acknowledging the crowds. Only then did they decide the race had probably finished!

  • Andy Duncan, in his 348tb, had a spot of bad luck. After having a good spin in the first lap of qualifying he whacked the barrier at the first place that was not protected by the soft Recticel crash barriers. A couple more feet to the left and he would have had a very soft landing. Thankfully the car was ready for the race, albeit having to start from the back of the grid.

  • It was particularly sad that Nicki Constantine, part of the team which runs the circuit, was killed in a road accident whilst driving to work the day before the meeting. John Swift summed up everyone’s feelings when he said “Her colleagues were understandably stunned by her death and having difficulty in coming to terms with the grim reality. Tragedies like this are particularly difficult to bear by those who are too young to have experienced death at first hand.”
