GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 12 : CASTLE COMBE : 11/12 SEPT 1999

PADDOCK STORIES

  • Cameron Boni, a complete newcomer to racing, was welcomed to the series in his 'O' class 348. Completely unfazed by thundering F40s around him, he earned plaudits for his sensible use of mirrors and it will not be long before he picks up the pace of his class compatriots.

  • The warm weather brought a good crowd to the Club hospitality marquee - the many FOC members were excellently looked after, as always, by Derek and the Goodyear guests were hosted by the lovely Natalie. It was also good to see Richard Pursey of Adam Associates providing his enthusiastic support for the Italia Autosport team. Rachel and Bruno Cappuccini had important guests from the charity of which they are both trustees: Friends of Chernobyl's Children. A significant donation was made to the Charity in return for being able to spend a day with the Cappuccini racing team.

  • The best story of all has to be that apparently Fred Moss and David Ashburn have agreed to swap cars for the last GMFC round and the winner gets to keep both F355s! Freddie's sponsors, Blackwater, put on a fine display of 355s outside the Club marquee - he might just become a customer for one.

  • Woody's Challenge car was not fitted with its usual engine. That one blew at the Ring and, with only limited time available between the two rounds, Italia Autosport's spare unit was fitted. It obviously worked well and gave him the 'C' class win in both heats, as well as the overall win in Heat 2 after Pogson's exclusion.

  • Built of stern stuff, these racers. Marc Gachoud's last lap bash into the tyre wall was quite substantial, including a dent in the roof from his helmet, but within 15 minutes he was off down the road in his road car to go to a friend's wedding. Mark Leighton was philosophically facing yet another rebuild of the 355, having already stitched it all together with bits from Amedeo Serra's car following a Thursday testing accident.

  • John Taylor's GT4 produced the best geyser of the year when he took the radiator cap off in the paddock after the Saturday race. Seems he forgot to bleed it.…

  • Peter Lowe had that far-away look as he talked about getting a GT2 drive for next year in the Dutch Porsche-Ferrari series which, whilst rich in Porsches, is always lacking in decent Ferrari representation.
