GOODYEAR MARANELLO FERRARI CHALLENGE
RACE REPORT : ROUND 11 : CROFT

Christopher's Croft

A smaller than usual grid of 21 starters turned up at this most northerly round of the Series and it was unfortunate to see some prominent contenders missing, including the Series leader, Stuart Bowler, and the two flat -12's of Cosby and Fordyce. Andy Christopher made convincingly sure of this one: he qualified his 308GTB on pole and led the race from beginning to end.

Qualifying brought two surprises: one was seeing newcomer Neil Woodford's F355/Ch in second place on the grid and the other was David Ashburn putting his 'O' class F355 on to fifth place. A slightly damp track no doubt had its part to play in this - 'O' class heroes always appear near the front of the grid when the going gets tricky. It would have been interesting had Gary Culver been there.

By race time on Sunday afternoon the track was dry and as the lights changed to green Andy C. disappeared into the lead he held to the finish, completely unchallenged. Woodford and George Christopher (308GT4) initially gave chase but within three laps Ian Hetherington's F50 came up from its sixth place grid position to take second. George never relented in his chase and finished less than a second behind in third.

The 355/Ch cars soon sorted themselves out into the fairly normal pattern, with John Pogson coming home ahead of Marco Attard and Neil Woodford in fourth, fifth and sixth places.

Amongst the 'O's, David Ashburn made a clean sweep of it. He qualified quickest, finished first (ninth overall) and established the class lap record. As this was David's first win in the 'O' class he certainly did it in convincing style. Fred Moss (348tb) and David Wilkinson (F355) fought a race-long duel for second place, with the verdict narrowly going to the kerb-climbing 348.

For his gritty drive in hanging on to the back-end of the F50, George Christopher was announced as the popular recipient of the Psygnosis Driver of the Day award.
